ELIZABETH WALKER CARRINGTON

This work is about marrying two of the things I love most --- design and art. I have always felt that design is art, and often is much cooler and more interesting than traditional medium. At first glance, my art is glossy eye candy, but on a deeper level it addresses topics like materialism, superficiality and love. Above all else, it seeks to be meticulous about color, shape and design.

My work is a tribute to Andy Warhol's statement that Pop Art is about “liking things.”  The pieces are a blend of design and type, lyrics and images from popular culture all mixed, layered and silhouetted. They are loosely designed on a computer and then screen printed on painted canvas and paper and touched up
by hand. They want to be pretty, sexy, cool—vain with a bit of irreverence—but above all, Pop.

I hold an interest in drawing as a mode of documentation and expression realized through the process of making a drawing. My process and approach to drawing has long developed from an interest in translating the mechanics of human motivation and drive into visual language. For example, the internalization and storage of past and present experience- physical, visual, and cognitive, parallel the accumulation and organization of line in my work. Other parallels have been made through various “perception” challenges given to the viewer via sculptural form and/or the illusion of space created by drawing.

The drawing process consists of layering continuous circular lines using a gel-ink pen directly on the given surface. These particular pens deliver a crisp thin line without troublesome bleedings and puddles allowing me to draw at a fairly fast pace and create a dense fibrous network of any organization.
