Carlos Cortes - "Faux
Bois" |
|
Carlos Cortes is a third
generation "faux bois" concrete artisan carrying on
a family tradition that has its Texas roots in San
Antonio, circa 1924. Carlos' great-uncle Dionisio
Rodriguez brought this European form of sculpting to
the U.S. from Mexico City and taught it to Carlos'
father, Maximo Cortes. Carlos designs and builds
unique "faux bois" concrete sculptures that fit the
smaller garden setting or larger public art
installations for the urban landscape.
Architects, Engineers and
Designers have commissioned Carlos to build
functional structures that add aesthetic appeal to
their projects. Recent work includes: Brackenridge
Bridge Restoration, Riverwalk Trellis Arbor, Arnold
Palmer Golf Course at La Cantera, Witte Museum HEB
Science Tree house, plus other sites in and around
San Antonio.

Artist statement: For many years,
I have been in a dream group, where we study our own
pathology through the tending of each others'
dreams. The root, or "route" word "path" in
pathology tells of our chore and mission as we
search to find wholeness and work towards becoming
our authentic selves. It was through such a dream
that this work began.

I paint
watercolors, color-drenched in layers of metaphor.
The incidences of serendipity, moments of expanded
consciousness, heightened awareness are what my
interests, and painting focus is about. It could be
a moment when one is lost in the depths of a flower,
beyond labeling it as a certain type of flower, and
sensing a deep connection with its beingness.
I first experienced finger painting around the age
of three. The exhilaration of those moments are
alive with me today, as I embark in every painting
experience as an adventure to a world yet to be
discovered. I decided to become an artist when I was
five years old and recall taking my first plein aire
oil painting class outside of the Witte museum when
I was nine.
I have been enjoying teaching classes and workshops
for many years. I’m currently taking some months off
to have shows, take workshops and spend more time in
the studio painting.
