Past
Imperfect
"For
some time now I have been interested in the traces
that remain on walls, shards, and parchments -
vestiges of the past - unclear fragments that have
lost their original meaning and provenance. In a new
context they signify something quite different.
I like to think of this work as a visual equivalent
of the imperfect tense in a romance language-
the tense of ambiguity and uncertainty."

My work translates images derived from ink blots
into intricate and labor intensive colored
pencil drawings, paintings, and sewn felt pieces
as a means of inquiry into uncertain states of
“in-between-ness” and the slippery nature of
perception and meaning derived from what we
see. I am interested in the infinite
originality of ink blots (no one is exactly like
another) and the fact that it is a “found” image
unattached to any equivalent object in the

The artist discovered
the art of papel picado in the late 80's, when she
moved to San Antonio. She continues exporing
applications and new materials for cutting
contemporary subject matter with traditional
techniques of hammer and chisel, as well as knife
cutting. Trenchard enjoys researching, collecting,
writing, teaching and demonstrating paper cutting
techniques found in international cultures. Her
book, Mexican Papercutting, was published by Lark
Books in 1998, and she keeps a running catalogue of
her own collection of cut paper art.
