Laurie Brainerd, fiber artist:
statement and images to come

Liz Azford, fiber artist
My recent work focuses upon multiple systems of
patterning, sometimes layered, sometimes juxtaposed.
I begin with white silk organza, which I batik,
screen-print, and/or resist-dye with geometric
patterning. The silk is mechanically fused with wool
roving, and the precise geometic patterning is
modified, distorted, as the wool shrinks to become
felt. Finally I draw over the patterning with cotton
embroidery thread to reinforce - or obscure - the
patterning.
Description of work: Screen-printed and resist-dyed
silk organza layered with raw wool roving and
felted; stitched.

Chuck Ramirez Studio Visit |
Chuck Ramirez is an artist and designer who lives
and works in San Antonio,
Texas. His large-scale photographic portraits of
banal objects are often humorous,
yet poignant metaphors for the transient nature of
consumer culture and the
frailty of life. His work has been shown
extensively, both locally and nationally
as well as
exhibits in Europe, Mexico and South America.
He resides in the Lower King William
neighborhood with his three cats Leo,
Marble Kitty, and Gray. He loves cooking and
entertaining, and is
often seen wandering aimlessly about the
produce, wine, and cheese departments
of Central Market. His motto: “When I’m empty
please dispose of me
properly.”

My
goal is to capture the essence of how I feel about a
particular subject and share that emotional bond
with my viewers. To achieve this, I limit myself to
painting and drawing what I know and love. I want to
convey to the world the beauty of the spider as well
as the butterfly. I hope you enjoy my art. It is my
life's pleasure to bring the natural world to you.

My
work encompasses drawing, painting, sculpture and
video. The medium or material used for each specific
project or series is chosen for its ability to best
illustrates the concept that drives the work.
I am currently working on several pieces involving
community- the nature and scale of various
communities, the ties that bind communities and the
dynamics within those groups.
