Mark Schlesinger |
I
make my own paint. As a fluid material, my paint is
made not to dry as glossy as other water based
acrylics, but as matte as wax. Also when dried it
could stick to untraditional materials like plastic
and vinyl grounds, it could shrink, warp, crinkle a
flexible ground, roll an unsecured edge of a supple
ground. Its surface could crack. It could be the
glue that holds the painting together- the paint’s
color to the ground, the ground to the rigid wood
bar supports, and the wood bars to each other- in
such a way that the painting appears to fragment and
open up as easily as it comes together, sequencing
how the painting was made, and locating the
instability in the stability.

Agnes Welsh Eyster |
|
Before going to the other side, I received various
awards in the watercolor world where I‘d worked for
many years. The road from there to here has been
challenging and scary, but also exciting.
In those early days I was also active in volunteer
organizations and wore stockings. Today I mostly
mind my own business, wear Birkenstocks, and get
regular tetanus shots. Sheet metal of all kinds,
bottle caps, tin cans, wire, bottle caps and metal
road-kill have found their way onto my canvas, and
instead of wielding a paintbrush, the methods I use
involve etching, embossing, plasma-cutting,
shearing, drilling, hammering, riveting, and
nailing. Although the medium differs from my earlier
work, I still am faced with issues basic to all art:
composition, design, texture, aesthetics and
content. For now, I continue exploring the materials
at hand and see where they lead.
