Studio Visit with Sabra Booth

Sabra Booth

Natural forms and processes have always been a principal source of inspiration for my work. Sometimes my approach is on the surface strictly formal, an exploration into color, line, and shape. Beneath the literal, are metaphors often harkening back to the body. A leaf curls into an orifice or abstract forms become cellular. Like the 19th century naturalists, I often sketch and paint flora and fauna on site.

REM Gallery visit - Drawings and Sculpture by Soomin Jung

Soomin Jung

The Idea:
I discover. I discover things that are too little and too ordinary to be noticed and appreciated, and yet fascinate me in an everyday life. From a very serious, huge, and yet very well known idea to the silly personal memory, and everything in between is a nominee for a bigger subject matter.

About Drawing:
I am a drawer. I draw on mylar with colored pencils. The drawing activity to create an image as real as possible investing good amount of time, sincere care and effort is my appreciation to the ordinary things that I discovered in an everyday life. It takes only a glance to discover an “out-of-ordinary” in an ordinary life, but the weight of its beauty is heavier than how much time I spend staring and appreciating it.

About Sculpture:
I am a drawer. I draw in a space with threads. Threads are not so different than colored pencils. Using threads only gives me freedom to draw in a space. Rather arbitrary and ambiguous ideas come to life through three-dimensional drawings. The process of casting shapes with threads and building structure up by putting parts together to create a bigger structure is very similar to the growth of thoughts.

Visit to Parchman-Stremmel Gallery - Annual Pottery Guild Show

About the Potters Guild
The San Antonio Potters Guild was established as a nonprofit organization in 1995. The membership is diverse, representing working potters, sculptural artists, and students, as well as supporters of the ceramic arts. The Guild’s mission is to cultivate and nurture clay artists and collectors while at the same time celebrating and extending humanity’s ten thousand-year heritage of fired clay.

In addition to the charity event Empty Bowls, the group sponsors an annual juried exhibition, scholarships, a members’ art sale, and hosts various workshops and regular educational programs. Membership is open to potters as well as friends and sponsors interested in the field.
